Lucky Dube South African Reggae Star

Lucky Dube was a South African reggae star, who recorded 22 albums in English, Zulu and even Afrikaans over a 25 year career, making him South Africa's biggest reggae artist, selling more albums than anybody else in this category. His work spanned from laid back sunshine reggae to more serious socio-political messages. Tragically Lucky Dube was murdered by car thieves in a Johannesburg suburb on the 18th of October 2007. Lucky Dube was 43 years old.

Lucky Philip Dube was born on the third of August 1964 in Ermelo, a small town in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa . He was raised by his mother and grandmother since his father left before he was born.

His first band was formed during his school days, and they called themselves The Skyward Band . It was during his school years that Lucky Dube discovered Rastafarianism and at 18 years old he joined his cousin's band, The Love Brothers , which signed a record deal with Teal Record Company (later incorporated into Gallo Records). The band would record during school holidays in Johannesburg , with Lucky Dube as the main vocalist. The album was released as Lucky Dube and the Supersoul . The second album they released featured some lyrics written by Dube.

By the release of the fifth album the Supersoul was dropped from the name and albums were released as Lucky Dube albums . It was also around that time that Dube began to realise the popularity of reggae music and he began to draw inspiration from reggae artists Jimmy Cliff and Peter Tosh, who's socio-political reggae music lyrics he found to be relevant to South Africa at the time, as can be seen in Lucky Dube lyrics .

So it was that from 1984 Lucky Dube began his reggae music career, going on to win various awards locally and internationally and sharing the stage with world stars such as Sinéad O'Connor, Peter Gabriel and Sting.
