Artscape Theatre in Cape Town, South Africa

The Artscape, located in the Nico Theatre Centre (Cape Town City Foreshore), is South Africa’s first multi-purpose centre for the presentation of the performing arts. A striking, modern building, it houses two large scale theatres as well as two smaller performance venues, function rooms, rehearsal venues, dressing rooms, offices, Fine Music Radio (FMR), canteen facility, restaurant and more. At the centre of the complex is a 1145 seat opera house and a 540 seat theatre!

The Artscape theatre with 540 seats also has space for two wheelchairs either side of “R” row, the last row of seats in the auditorium. The seating is curved and raked for maximum viewing with comfortable deep blue velvet-covered chairs and easy access. Two wide, curving aisles facilitate entrances to and exits from the rows. Walnut wood encases the auditorium providing acoustic excellence. The orchestra pit can accommodate up to 20 musicians.

Originally the Arena Theatre was the right side stage of the Artscape Theatre, but in 1980 it was converted into a venue in its own right. It has its own bar downstairs at street level and provides an intimate, more adventurous space. It is a much more informal space with a raked auditorium that can seat 120 audience members.

The Theatre Foyer is a spacious area with a view of the city centre. Fully carpeted, it provides ample wall and floor areas for exhibitions, promotions and receptions and adjoins the Theatre. Carpeted stairs lead to the Lower Theatre foyer that is also ideal for presentations, smaller exhibitions and lunch hour concerts.

Artscape on the Side is a typical cabaret type venue. It has become a valuable launching pad for some of South Africa’s brightest new stars and is versatile and informal. The space is utilised for evenings of comedy, jazz, one-handers, theatresports, cabaret, experimental drama and music and poetry evenings – and plans are in the pipeline for even more variety. This venue can seat 100 patrons around small table and drinks may be had during the performance.

All in all, a top class venue!
