Garden Route, South Africa

The Garden Route is an area which runs along the southern coast of the Western Cape, between Quartzite Mountains and the Indian Ocean. This is an area of stunning natural beauty and is incredibly green for most of the year, due to its Mediterranean climate with fairly hot summers, and mild to cool winters. It is one of the highest rainfall areas in the province, most of which falls in the winter months; the rain is brought by the moist sea-winds from the Indian Ocean.

Everything about this area is perfect, from the pristine beaches to the tropical forests to the fabulous wildlife and birdlife in the area. Plettenberg Bay, Wilderness and Knysna are in the heart of the Garden Route. Anytime of the year is good for visiting the area, depending if you prefer a peaceful retreat during the winter months, or a bustling holiday destination during the summer.  At the eastern edge of the Garden Route is one of the country's best-preserved forests, with amazing walks taking in coastline and ancient trees.
